Health & Safety : New Guidance on Electrical, Control & Instrumentation [UK]

This article is on the new web portal for Electrical, Control and Instrumentation (EC & I) in the Onshore Chemicals, Explosives and Microbiological Sectors.

Safety processes and systems to mitigate & prevent major accident

A large number of processes rely on EC & I equipment to provide safety processes and systems that can mitigate and even prevent major accidents. This new portal will give comprehensive guidance on legislation that is used for inspections and safety reports on EC & I equipment at onshore major hazard installations. It is stated that “failure to control process conditions and the risks from electrical installations and equipment have been the main or underlying causes of many accidents both in the UK and abroad”.

Occupational Safety topics covered

The EC & I guidance states it covers these topics:
  • Functional Safety
  • Explosive Atmospheres
  • Electrical Power Systems
  • COMAH Safety Reports
There are a variety of resources available in the portal including the EC & I Operational Delivery Guide,  Safety Report Assessment Manual (SRAM) Guide, links other resources, reports on recent incidents and news on current events. You can subscribe to the portal via RSS feeds, ebulletins, podcasts and mobile notifications. For further and more detailed information please visit the portal via the HSE website.   Sources: EC & I Portal on the HSE website published on the 5th Janurary 2015.
