HSE Safety Notice: maintenance of industrial UPS systems

A quick summary of the article

The HSE recently carried out several investigations into dangerous occurrences, such as localised fires or unplanned release of toxic substances, which resulted from a failure of industrial UPS systems at onshore major hazard establishments. Failure of these industrial UPS systems typically resulted in a loss of power to industrial control systems, emergency shutdown systems and emergency mitigation systems. From the investigations there are actions required by each of the following groups to ensure that you are meeting your legal requirements:

  • Designers, manufacturers, importers and suppliers
  • End users and maintenance contractors
  • Major hazard establishments
