On March 3, 2020, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a list of EPA-registered disinfectant products that are effective against SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The list was updated on March 13, 2020.
The publication of this list provides employers and the public with increased guidance on which disinfectants can be used to clean surfaces and other objects where SARS-CoV-2 might be present.
The disinfectants on List N have qualified under EPA’s emerging viral pathogen program for permissible labeling claims. The emerging viral pathogen program offers a streamlined process that allows manufacturers of EPA-registered disinfectants to label their products as effective against SARS-CoV-2.
Pesticides, including disinfectant products, are regulated under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). FIFRA requires regulated products to be tested, approved, registered, and properly labeled.
