OSHA proposes updates to its eye and face PPE standards [US]

In the March 13, 2015 Federal Register, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a proposed change to the eye and face personal protective equipment (PPE) standards in the general industry, shipyard employment, marine terminals, longshoring, and construction regulations. OSHA intends to incorporate the three most recent revisions of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Occupational and Educational Eye and Face Protection standard.
Personal Protective equipment : OSHA proposition to incorporate latest ANSI standards
OSHA proposes incorporating the latest revisions to ANSI’s Occupational and Educational Eye and Face Protection standard, ANSI Z87.1-2010, and removing the reference to the 1989 standard, ANSI Z87.1-1989 in both the general industry and maritime industry standards. OSHA’s regulations would subsequently allow the use of eye and face PPE that comply with the three most recent editions of the ANSI Z87.1 standard:- ANSI Z87.1-2010;
- Z87.1-2003;
- Z87.1-1989 (R-1998).
OSHA proposition to harmonize the construction standard with the general industry and maritime industry standards.
OSHA’s current construction standard is not the same as the general and industry and maritime industry standards, as it was not updated during the last round of eye and face PPE revisions. OSHA proposes harmonizing the construction standard with the proposed general industry and maritime industry standards. OSHA will accept public comments on the proposed rule through April 13, 2015.
