US | EPA Releases Draft of 2022-2026 Strategic Plan

On October 1, 2021, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the availability of the Draft FY 2022-2026 EPA Strategic Plan. The Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) Modernization Act of 2010 requires agencies to develop Strategic Plans, which include:
  • A mission statement, long-term goals, objectives, and strategies to achieve them over a four-year period; and
  • Two-year Agency Priority Goals to encourage agency leadership priorities.
The EPA’s FY 2022-2026 Strategic Plan outline’s the Agency’s priorities for achieving its mission, which is to protect human health and the environment. Additionally, the EPA reaffirms its commitment to the three principles articulated by William Ruckelshaus, the EPA’s first Administrator, to: follow the science, follow the law, and be transparent. The Agency is adding a fourth foundational principle: advance justice and equity.

Strategic Goals

With these principles as a guide, the Strategic Plan takes on seven strategic goals:
  1. Tackle the climate crisis
  2. Take decisive action to advance environmental justice and civil rights
  3. Enforce environmental laws and ensure compliance
  4. Ensure clean and healthy air for all communities
  5. Ensure clean and safe water for all communities
  6. Safeguard and revitalize communities
  7. Ensure safety of chemicals for people and the environment
