Single-use plastics: EU Published Directive on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment –

With the entry of force of the Directive (EU) 2019/904, the Member States shall reduce the consumption and even forbid the placing on the market of certain single-use plastics as plates, straws and cups for beverages. The Member States should adopt all the necessary measures to achieve the objectives of the European Union on single-use plastics, including the objectives of separate collection. The Directive covers and restricts the placement on the market oxo-plastics, a type of plastic does not properly biodegrade and contributes to microplastic pollution in the environment. It is not compostable, negatively affects the recycling of conventional plastic and fails to deliver a proven environmental benefit. Furthermore, the Member States will ensure that extended producer responsibility schemes are stablished for the plastics stated in the part E of the Annex I. These schemes should cover all the cost derivate of the collection and treatment of their wastes. Member States should transpose the Directive (EU) 2019/904 into national law by 3 July 2021.
