PHMSA Requests Information on Regulatory Challenges to Safely Transporting Hazardous Materials on Highways and Rails in Automated Vehicles

Transportation
In the March 29, 2018 issue of the federal register the Federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) of the Department of Transportation requested information related to the development and potential use of automated technologies for surface modes (highways and rail) in hazardous materials transportation. PHMSA is requesting comments on the implications of the development, testing, and integration of automated technologies for highways and rail under the Hazardous Materials Regulations found in 49 CFR parts 171-180 and is attempting to determine whether this framework sufficiently takes into account the new technological innovations from automated vehicles. Comments can be submitted to http://www.regulations.gov referencing Docket Number PHMS-2018-0001, by fax at 1-202-493-2251, or by mail to Docket Operations, US Department of Transportation, West Building, Ground Floor, Room W12-140, Routing Symbol M-30, 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE, Washington DC 20590.   Source: PHMSA Requests Information on Regulatory Challenges to Safely Transporting Hazardous Materials on Highways and Rails in Automated Vehicles, 83 FR 13464 (2018).
