In the January 23, 2015 Maryland Register, the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) proposed amendments to its hazardous waste regulations, contained in COMAR 26.13.01 and 26.13.10. The amendments would incorporate changes to the federal hazardous waste regulations and require those receiving universal wastes to notify the MDE if the amount of universal waste exceeds 500 kilograms.

Reduction of current waste threshold

MDE proposes requiring those who receive universal waste to notify MDE if the amount of universal waste if the accumulated waste ever exceeds 500 kilograms. This is a reduction from the current threshold of 5,000 kilograms. The 500 kilogram limit is stricter than the federal rule.

Propositon of federal hazardous waste changes

MDE also proposes incorporating federal hazardous waste changes, including requirements for the recycling of cathode ray tubes, and the exemption of certain substances from regulation as a hazardous waste.
