Energy management : Review of Ireland’s radiation protection regulatory framework [IE]

Preparations are underway for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s review of Ireland’s radiation protection regulatory framework.

Review against international safety standards

The formal review, against international safety standards, will take place over 10 days from 31 August 2015. The review service, known as an ‘Integrated Regulatory Review Service’ (IRRS), will be carried out by 14 international regulators from the IAEA. It aims to provide external peer review of regulatory provisions and practice relating to radiation safety. The review is carried out in accordance with European directives on radiation protection.

Cooperation between the Department of Environment, DECLG, EPA and the Department of Health

The project is being led by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government (DECLG) in cooperation with the EPA and the Department of Health. In preparation for the autumn review, the project team is completing a self-assessment of Ireland’s regulatory provisions using the IAEA’s computer-based questionnaire. The answers to the questionnaire will then be assessed by the international regulatory experts. Red-on-line EHS legal expert
