President Trump Announces Intention to Exit the Paris Climate Accord

In a speech delivered in the Rose Garden at the White House on June 1, 2017, President Trump stated that the United States will withdraw from the Paris Agreement. The President described the United States’ withdrawal from the accord as necessary to protect the US economy from onerous emissions restrictions and foreign interference in US energy policy. The Paris Agreement was signed by 195 countries after it was finalized in December 2015 following 6 years of drafting and more than 20 years of negotiations. The countries that signed the climate accord agreed to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases in the coming years. It remains to be seen what process the US must follow to officially exit the Agreement and, because the accord specifies a four-year exit process, the US will remain a party to the Agreement until November 4, 2020.
