[US] Nike and IKEA join 221 companies voicing support for EPA’s climate change rule

Nike and IKEA are voicing their support for President Obama’s regulations to restrict carbon pollution from existing power plants.  They join 221 U.S. businesses who have signed-on to a letter supporting the rule.

U.S. businesses expressed support for the climate change measure

With the comment period closed on EPA’s landmark climate change bill that restricts greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from existing power plants, IKEA, Nike, and 221 other U.S. businesses expressed support for the climate change measure.  The companies, made up of manufacturers, technology firms, and apparel makers, signed-on to the letter circulated by Ceres and the Carbon Disclosure Project.

Cut carbon dioxide emissions 30 percent by 2030

One of the primary critiques of the climate change rule (also known as the Clean Power Plan) is that it will cause electricity prices to spike, hitting manufacturers and other businesses hard.  The letter signed by the group recognizes the changing landscape for businesses, who increasingly rely on renewable energy, such as rooftop solar, and energy efficiency solutions to cut costs.

The Clean Power Plan requires existing power plants to cut carbon dioxide emissions 30 percent by 2030 from 2005 levels.  The rule should be finalized next summer; however, it faces certain litigation from the coal industry.
