Public consultation on the ratification by the EU of the Minamata Convention on Mercury [EU]

On 14 August 2014, the European Commission launched public consultations on the ratification by the EU of the Minamata Convention on Mercury. The consultation aims to gather stakeholders’ views on specific issues related to the implementation of the Convention. The results of the consultation will feed into the preparation of the Impact Assessment covering key areas where EU legislation may need to be amended. Such areas include import restrictions for metallic mercury from non-Parties to the Convention and restrictions on certain processes where mercury is used.

The consultation will be open until 14 November 2014.

As a reminder, Directives 2014/69/EU, 2014/70/EU, 2014/71/EU, 2014/72/EU, 2014/73/EU, 2014/74/EU, 2014/75/EU, 2014/76/EU of 13 March 2014 provided for new exemptions from the restriction of the use of lead and mercury in certain electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). For that purpose, the new Directives amended Annexes III and IV to Directive 2011/65/EU of 8 June 2011 on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in EEE.
