On the occasion of a parliamentary question concerning the use of Bisphenol A (BPA), the European Commission (EC) indicated that it is currently assessing the opinion on the risks to public health from BPA published by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The EC also intends to work with EU Member States in order to:

• 1. assess the adequacy of existing EU measures on BPA,
• 2. establish whether additional risk management measures are necessary.

Re-assessment of BPA exposure and toxicity by EFSA

For information, EFSA’s re-evaluation of BPA exposure and toxicity concluded that “BPA poses no health risk to consumers of any age group (including unborn children, infants and adolescents) at current exposure levels”.

Regulatory reminder on BPA classification

As a reminder, In a press release issued on 19 March 2014, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced that the Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) supported a French proposal to strengthen existing harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) of bisphenol A (BPA) from a category 2 reproductive toxicant (suspected to be toxic for human reproduction) to a category 1B (assumed to be toxic for human reproduction) concerning the adverse effects on sexual function and fertility.
