REACH: new test methods for reducing the number of animals used for experimental purposes [EU]

The new Regulation updates Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 mainly in order to include new and updated alternative test methods recently adopted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Such alternative tests aim to obtain a reduction of the number of animals to be used for experimental purposes, in accordance with Directive 2010/63/EU of 22 September 2010 on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes and Directive 86/609/EEC of 24 November 1986 on the approximation of laws, regulations and administrative provisions of the Member States regarding the protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes.

Regulation (EU) No 260/2014 applies from 22 March 2014. As a reminder, In February and March 2014, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) launched public consultations on twenty-one testing proposals involving vertebrate animals, in accordance with REACH Regulation. The consultation is still open until 17 April 2014 for the following substances:
  • 1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl 2-ethylperoxyhexanoate
  • 1,3-diethyldiphenylurea
  • 2,2′-azobis[2-methylbutyronitrile]
  • 2,4,6,8-tetramethyl-2,4,6,8-tetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane
  • 2-ethylhexanoic acid, monoester with propane-1,2-diol
  • 3,3′-iminodi(propylamine)
  • 3,7-dimethyloct-6-enenitrile
