Amendment to the Packaging Waste Regulations (UK)

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has published on 28th November 2016 The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) (Amendment) Regulations 2016. These Regulations amend the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007 by setting new packaging targets for plastic for 2016 to 2020 and for glass for 2018 to 2020. The target for recycling by re-melt for 2016 and 2017 is continued for 2018 to 2020. These Regulations come into force on 20th December 2016.

These Regulations amend the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007 (S.I. 2007/871). Those Regulations impose on producers the obligation to recover and recycle packaging waste in order to attain the recovery and recycling targets set out in Article 6(1) of European Parliament and Council Directive 94/62/EC (OJ No L 365, 31.12.94, p10). These Regulations establish new recycling targets for plastic for 2016 to 2020 and for glass for 2018 to 2020. The target for recycling by re-melt for 2016 and 2017 is continued for 2018 to 2020.
