OSHA backtracks on the classification of kinesiology tape as medical treatment [US]

In an interpretation letter dated July 6, 2015 the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rescinded its prior interpretation letter classifying the use of kinesiology tape as medical treatment that must be recorded when used to treat a work-related injury.

OSHA  do not consider the use of kinesiology tape as medical treatment beyond first aid

OSHA now categorizes the use of kinesiology tape as first aid treatment, not subject to recordkeeping requirements.

First aid treatment is defined in 29 CFR 1904.7 as “any non-rigid means of support, such as elastic bandages, wraps, non-rigid back belts, etc.” Used alone, kinesiology tape and other types of elastic taping are not considered to be medical treatment.
