EPA seeks comment from product manufacturers on how to improve product labeling [US]

EPA is requesting comments on its Design for the Environment Label, which is used on more than 2,500 products. Focus group studies have shown consumers have little understanding of the label. EPA is seeking public comments by October 31, 2014.

EPA is reaching out to the public and industry seeking comment on its Design for the Environment Label. The Label appears on more than 2,500 products and is meant to show to consumers that a product doesn’t contain a “chemical of concern” and was made using ingredients that federal scientists consider less harmful than similar compounds. The label has been used since 1992, but EPA is seeking comment on how to make it clearer to consumers. Industry groups have expressed concern as the label could imply claims about product safety that would not be permitted in other regulatory contexts.

EPA is accepting comments through October 31, 2014 on the Design for Environment website.
