New WEEE Regulations for 2014 [EU]

These 2014 Regulations replace and revoke the following regulations:
  • European Communities (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Regulations 2011 (as amended) ; and
  • European Communities (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) (Amendment) Regulations 2013.
These 2014 Regulations are drafted to allow for the:
  • prevention of waste electrical and electronic equipment; and
  • preparing the re-use, recycling and other forms of recovery of such wastes as so as to reduce the disposal of waste and to contribute to the efficient use of resources and the retrival of valuable secondary raw materials.
The primary purpose of the 2014 Regulations is to give effect to the European Directive 2012/19/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 4 July 2012 on waste electrical and electronic equipment. The recast European Directive 2012/19/EU gives Member States, once it is transposed into national law, more effective ways to combat the illegal export of waste more effectively especially illegal shipment of WEEE waste that is made to look as if it complies with Directive for the sole purpose of non compliance with the EU waste treatment rules.By way of reminder; the European Union (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Regulations 2014 came into force on 28 March 2014.
