[EU] New system for reducing carbon emissions and energy costs in airports

In a press release dated 28 July 2014, the European Commission (EC) announced the development of a new system, called “Cascade”, aiming to reduce by 20% CO2 emissions and energy costs in airports. The new system can detect, using sensors, malfunctions such as simultaneous use of heating and air conditioning or control errors, and to immediately alert the teams responsible for energy management and maintenance. Pilot trials are being conducted in two Italian airports. Furthermore, it is indicated that this software can be replicated to other buildings such as hospitals and banks.

As a reminder, Regulation (EU) No 448/2014 of 2 May 2014 amended Regulation (EU) No 1035/2011 of 17 October 2011 laying down common requirements for the provision of air navigation services. The amendments aim to update the references to the Annexes to the Convention on International Civil Aviation (also known as Chicago Convention).
